LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

Classy Newcastle thrash Chelsea 4-1 as James sees red

NEWCASTLE, England, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak netted on his return from injury, while two quick-fire second-half goals and a late Anthony Gordon strike gave the Magpies a 4-1 Premier League win over 10-man Chelsea at St James' Park on Saturday. Chelsea drew level 10 minutes later as Raheem Sterling was brought down on the edge of the box, and the winger stepped up to drill the resulting free kick past the flat-footed Nick Pope. Newcastle almost went in ahead at the break as a free kick from fullback Kieran Trippier hit the crossbar, but there was little indication of the collapse to come from Chelsea in the second half. Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, slammed his side after a result that leaves them 10th on 16 points, saying it was their worst game of the season. But Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled in an 80th-minute equaliser with his right foot to deny City a 24th successive home win in all competitions. The result left City on 29 points from 13 games with Liverpool one point behind and Arsenal later claimed a late 1-0 victory at Brentford thanks to Kai Havertz's header. Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool and City into first place with 30 points. Haaland did what he does best, firing home after Alisson's poor clearance had found its way to Nathan Ake. Arsenal's Arteta charged by FA over referee criticism
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 16 (Reuters) - Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for comments that were insulting towards match officials, English soccer's governing body said on Thursday. Arteta had branded the decision not to rule out Anthony Gordon's goal in Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Nov. 4 as an embarrassment and a disgrace, after the goal stood following a triple VAR assessment. "Mikel Arteta has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following comments that he made in media interviews after Arsenal's Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday 4 November," the FA statement said. "It's alleged that his comments constitute misconduct as they are insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute." Arteta now has until Nov. 21 to provide a response to the charge.

PGMOL chief Webb stands by VAR decision on Gordon goal
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Nov 15 (Reuters) - Referees body (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb said there was no conclusive evidence available for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to disallow Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle United against Arsenal earlier this month. "The ball then comes over and Joelinton challenges Gabriel (Magalhaes), and it could be a foul, might be a foul. The VAR decides that the evidence from the footage isn't clear enough to intervene with a recommendation for a review for a clear error. The VAR went through that diligently and identified no clear evidence to intervene to overturn the goal. However, Webb said VAR fell short during Wolverhampton Wanderers game against Newcastle last month.

Solanke double fires Bournemouth to upset win over Newcastle
  + stars: | 2023-11-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BOURNEMOUTH, England, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Two second-half strikes by forward Dominic Solanke gave Bournemouth a 2-0 home win over a depleted Newcastle United on Saturday which lifted the Cherries to 17th place in the Premier League table, three points clear of the relegation zone. Newcastle were missing a slew of players through injury and suspension, forcing manager Eddie Howe, a former player and manager at Bournemouth, to deploy Anthony Gordon as a makeshift centre forward. Pope's efforts were undone at the resulting corner as his defence failed to clear and Solanke was on hand with an improvised close-range finish to double the lead. The second goal took the wind out of Newcastle's sails and Bournemouth wasted chances to add to their lead through Solanke and substitutes Luis Sinisterra and Dango Outtara. Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier declined to blame his side's hectic schedule and the injuries and suspensions that caused key players to miss the game.

Newcastle condemned Sunday the discriminatory abuse sent to Bruno Guimarães and Joe Willock in the wake of a controversy-laden Premier League match against Arsenal that has sparked heavy criticism by the London club about the standard of officiating in England’s top division. Willock, who is Black, used his Instagram account to highlight racist messages he received after Newcastle's 1-0 win on Saturday. Guimarães, a Brazil international, was also involved in some of the most heated incidents of the match at St. James' Park. Newcastle said it “strongly condemns” the abuse toward its midfielders, adding: “We are providing support to Bruno and Joe and will work with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible so that they can be held to account.”Kick It Out, a leading anti-discrimination group in soccer, called on social media companies to offer better safeguards against the abuse. Arsenal hasn't commented on the discriminatory messages, choosing instead to direct its ire toward the match officials.

Nov 5 (Reuters) - Newcastle United have condemned racist abuse sent to Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock on social media following Saturday's 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League. "We are providing support to Bruno and Joe and will work with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible so that they can be held to account." The 24-year-old posted screenshots of the racist abuse he received on Instagram with the caption: "It's a game of football mate, no need for this. Anti-discriminatory body Kick It Out said the two players were "targeted with disgusting racial abuse", adding that social media companies must offer better safeguards and cannot escape without consequences. Nmecha strikes to give Dortmund vital win at Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, England, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund rekindled their hopes in Champions League Group F with a gritty 1-0 victory at Newcastle United thanks to Felix Nmecha's clinical first-half strike on Wednesday. Nmecha's well-taken goal near the end of a high-octane opening half proved enough for the Bundesliga side to post their first win in the group at the third time of asking. The two sides will meet again in a fortnight in Dortmund in a match that is likely to be pivotal. Nmecha's first Champions League goal at the end of a high-octane opening half was Dortmund's first in the competition this season and ultimately it proved decisive. Dortmund stifled Newcastle after that but needed some luck in the dying minutes to go home with the points.

Almiron, Isak score as Newcastle see off Burnley

NEWCASTLE, England, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Miguel Almiron and Alexander Isak struck as Newcastle United comfortably beat Burnley 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to claim a third straight win in all competitions. While the victory may not live as long in the memory as Newcastle's 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United or their 1-0 League Cup win over Manchester City, manager Eddie Howe will be pleased with his side's performance ahead of a Champions League clash against Paris St Germain. Almiron opened the scoring in the 14th minute, cutting in onto his left foot and firing a brilliant dipping shot into the top corner after Kieran Trippier won back possession deep in Burnley's half. Forward Isak netted the second in the 76th minute with a coolly taken penalty, sending keeper James Trafford the wrong way after Newcastle were awarded a penalty for a foul on Anthony Gordon by Ameen Al-Dakhil. CNN —Manchester City suffered a first defeat of the season against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup as star striker Erling Haaland was left on the bench. It remained 1-0, however, condemning Guardiola to a third consecutive early exit in the Carabao Cup after defeats against Southampton last year and West Ham the year before. Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty ImagesAfter winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup last year, Wednesday’s loss means that Man City will be unable to go one better and win an unprecedented quadruple this season. “There are guys who have played a lot of minutes … I decided with this lineup, I always have done that in the Carabao Cup since day one when I arrived. In the Carabao Cup I always play the players who never regularly play.”Prior to the game, Guardiola had lamented not being able to travel by plane between Manchester and Newcastle.

Barnes foot injury substantial, says Newcastle manager Howe

Sept 26 (Reuters) - Newcastle United's Harvey Barnes could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, as his manager Eddie Howe confirmed on Tuesday that the foot injury is a serious one. Barnes, who signed from Leicester City in July, was forced off with the injury in the 12th minute of Newcastle's 8-0 win at Sheffield United on Sunday. I think it's quite a substantial injury," Howe told reporters ahead of Newcastle's League Cup game against Manchester City. Anthony Gordon replaced Barnes in the thumping of Sheffield United, and was one of eight different scorers in that game. Newcastle, who lost to Manchester United in last season's League Cup final, host Manchester City in the third round of the competition on Wednesday.

Chelsea's woes continued as they lost at home to Aston Villa and Sheffield United slumped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a humiliating 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle United in which eight different Newcastle players scored. The first north London Premier League derby since 2014 not to feature Harry Kane produced an enthralling contest at The Emirates where the two unbeaten sides went toe-to-toe. Arsenal twice led, first through Cristian Romero's 26th-minute own goal, and again thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty early in the second half. Mitoma then wrapped up the points as Brighton moved above Tottenham and Arsenal with 15 points. Newcastle ran riot at Sheffield United in the weekend's final action as they put eight past the hapless Blades -- their biggest win in the Premier League since they put eight past Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

LIVERPOOL, England, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal of the season as Everton ended their three-match losing streak in the Premier League with an impressive 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at home on Saturday. "For the team and for myself to get the win today it went exactly how I hoped," Calvert-Lewin said. The result ended Palace's unbeaten run of three league games and also means that they are yet to win an away league game this term. "I think we were second best in every department of the game," Palace manager Patrick Vieira told the BBC. "We saw a team who played with determination to win the game and we didn't match that level.
MANCHESTER, England, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Struggling Nottingham Forest pulled off a stunning 1-0 win over Liverpool to claim only their second victory of the season in the Premier League on Saturday, while champions Manchester City continued their chase of leaders Arsenal. Liverpool had gathered some momentum after a poor start to the season and arrived at the City Ground to face bottom club Forest on the back of consecutive league wins. Forest moved off the bottom with nine points and manager Steve Cooper said: "This is a big win but only a win. To win a game against someone like Liverpool, you need to have very good moments at both ends. Liverpool are seventh on 16 points after 11 matches, 11 behind leaders Arsenal, who visit Southampton on Sunday.
